3LHD's project Hotel Lone, won the annual "Viktor Kovačić" award for the most successful architectural achievement in 2011. on Saturday at the award ceremony of Croatian Architects' Association held at the Gallery Oranžerija in Vukovar. This year 85 projects were in competition, and all the nominees and award-winning projects can be seen at the annual exhibition of works by Croatian architects in Gallery Oranžerija in Vukovar.

3LHD's project Hotel Lone is among the nominees for the annual "Viktor Kovačić award" for the best architectural realization in 2011. The awards ceremony will be held on December 16th 2011 in Vukovar. 3LHD is a part of another work nominated for the annual CAA award: the Book "A Peripheral Moment" by Ivan Rupnik, which was nominated for the annual "Neven Šegvić award". This year the annual exhibition of works by Croatian architects reported a total of 85 realizations. The winners will be announced on December 17th 2011 in Vukovar, at the opening of the annual CAA exhibition.

As part of the events to mark the fifteen years of Architecture and Civil Engineering Faculty in Banja Luka, which take place from mid October to mid December Sasa Begovic will be holding a lecture on 3LHD projects. The lecture will be held in the red parlor of the Cultural Centre Banski Dvori on the 15th of November.

"Here is the chair" seminar on furnishing and design with particular emphasis on the history and design chairs made in Italy is being held under the auspices of the Embassy of the Republic of Italy and the Udine Chamber of Commerce in Hotel Esplanade on November 14th. As part of the seminar Nikola Radeljković from Numen / For Use and Sasa Begovic from 3LHD will be giving a lecture.

Center Zamet designed by 3LHD architects won a silver medal at the ceremony of IOC/IAKS Award 2011 held in Cologne on 26th of October. In this year's international competition with a record number of applications of 133 projects from 36 countries, Zamet Centre shared the silver medal with the sports hall Podčetrtek. In their category E - single indoor facilities gold was not granted. IOC/IAKS Award and IPC/IAKS Distinction Award are given biennially by the International Olympic Committee and International Association for Sports and recreation facilities, and Para-Olympic International Association for best architectural achievements of facilities intended for sports and recreation and projects specifically adapted for athletes and spectators with disabilities.

PKN Zagreb Vol.10 will be held on June 30th, in Kino Mosor community centre (Zvonimirova 63). Starting at 8pm, the 10th edition will be moderated by Kresimir Mikic, and the presenters are: Studio Grupa, Lauba/Vanja Žanko, Miran Kurspahić, Nina Kurtela, Sandra Križić Roban, Pulska grupa, Udruga Ukus, Veljko Popović, Valeria Vrček and Niko Mihaljevic. Special guests are Welcomin' Committee In Flames, visual identity was designed by Boris Ljubičić and the organizers are Rasadnik Bruketa&Žinic, Lana Cavar, Komakino, 3LHD.

Hotel Lone, situated in the Monte Mulini forest park, Rovinj's most attractive tourist zone, was opened for public on June 23rd. Lone is the first Croatian hotel member of the international group Design Hotels^TM designed by Croatian architects, designers and artists. The Architects from studio 3LHD were responsible for the design and construction of the hotel building, designers from Numen / For Use designed the furniture, fashion studio I-GLE designed the staff uniforms and other textile. Artist Silvio Vujičić created graphics on fabrics for the rooms. Installations in the hotel lobby were made by a group of innovative artists: Ivana Franke - "Room for running ghost"; Silvio Vujičić - "In the hanging garden no one speaks" and the fashion studio I-GLE - textile compositions No1, No2, No3.

3LHDs project has won the 2nd prize on the public, invited competition for the urban design of Pula Waterfront. The basic concept of the project is life by the sea through the transformation and redevelopment of the coastal belt and the preservation and revitalization of historic values.

This edition of the PKN Zagreb will be held on April 14th in Kino Europa. Vol.9 is a part of the global event Inspire Japan and all proceeds from the tickets will go to Architecture for Humanity and will be used solely to rebuild Japan. The opening of the traveling exhibition Continuity of the modernity will be held on April 1st 2011. at 7PM in the small salon of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art on Rijeka Korso. The visitors will be able to look at more than thirty projects from the most prolific period of Croatian architecture from the thirties of last century. The exhibition will be open until April 17th 2011.

Mies van der Rohe Award finalists were announced. 343 projects from Europe were nominated this year, 9 of them from Croatia. Two 3LHDs projects were nominated: Zagreb Dance Centre and Zamet Centre. Zagreb Dance Centre was shortlisted, and will be exhibited in Barcelona with 44 other shortlisted projects. This prestigious award is presented every two years in the organization of the Foundation Mies van der Rohe, with the goal to recognize and award quality architectural production in Europe.

3LHDs project has won a 2nd ex aequo prize on the competition for the design of a residential area with sport and business facilities in Poreč. The jury has awarded two ex aequo 2nd prizes and two ex aequo 3rd prizes, the first prize was not awarded. The concept of 3LHDs project was created by analyzing the morphology of the Istrian settlements and land topography.

The exhibition Award-winning architecture in Croatia 1990.-2009. opens in Gliptoteka on Saturday, 19th February at 12:00. The publication and exhibition document the architectural works that have won prestigious national awards within the architectural profession: the annual CAA awards and "Vladimir Nazor" award given by the Republic of Croatia. 3LHD is presented in the exhibition with these projects: Memorial Bridge, Villa Klara, Croatian Pavilion at Expo 2005, House J2 and Zamet Centre. The exhibition remains open until March 5th and can be viewed on Tuesday - Friday 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday - Sunday 10:00 to 14:00.

3LHDs project, Campus Borongaj, won the 2nd prize on the architectural and urban design competition for the design of the campus Borongaj in Zagreb. By planning the new Borongaj Campus we are also creating a development plan for a new part of the city, and we need to resolve two important issues: how to create a new quality part of the city and what will be a major catalyst for its development. 3LHD has proposed the creation of the concept of clusters in a green forest, clearly defining the "empty" natural areas, borders, infrastructure and hierarchy. Each cluster has a matrix and its specificity - the public space, public buildings and a formed façade. In this way we gradually develop a plan for the Green Campus Borongaj.

A presentation of Ivan Rupnik's book A Peripheral Moment is being held on December 22nd at bar Kota (Medulićeva 20), starting at 08:00PM. The book, published by Actar Publishers presents a highly productive decade of architectural experimentation in Croatia. The author takes the reader through the phenomenon of a fascinating architectural scene, using the theory of the periphery by Ljubo Karaman, the concept of architectural experimentation by Manfred Tafuri, as well as contemporary notions of an agency. The account is framed using a variety of different lenses, including the observations of this moment by renowned writers, through the atmosphere of the period as defined by Croatia's complex post-socialist/postwar identity and the subsequent positioning of the architectural profession vis-a-vis that context, the practices that emerged, and through a series of discussions with some of the peripheral moment's primary agent provocateurs: 3LHD, njiric +, Randic - Turato, and STUDIO UP.

The roof plate of Hotel Lone has been finished only three months and a half months after the first concrete on the construction site was cast. Work on the construction site is taking place around the clock so the hotel could be finished within the deadline and be ready for guests by the end of tourist season 2011. The first party in the future congress hall of the hotel was held to celebrate the occasion.

3LHDs project Green Pavilion has won 1st prize on the competition for a restaurant on the Agriculture and Forestry University campus. The idea behind the new pavilion / restaurant is to create a space maximally taking in account the quality high trees on the plot. The possible area for construction is defined by mapping the existing greenery. By raising the "cut" green territory in the air the space "below" is created. The basic formal and functional element and a seasonal regulator of light is a so-called vegetative canopy that has been formed along the entire roof edge.

On an architectural competition for the redesign of squares Pavlinski, Cilnica and Potok street in Senj 3LHDs project has one 2nd prize. The concept of the project starts from the fact that Senj has a completely defined and built structure and does not need a big change but a new contemporary layer that will regulate further development of all of the elements and link them together. By defining the two main squares - Cilnica and Pavlinski through their historical roles and green oases and linking the whole area by a stone paving of equal modules and a "white line", the area is unified into a harmonious and distinctive urban space.

3LHDs project 4_Towers has won the first prize on the competition for a new residential block on Zavrtnica, Zagreb's new urban area. The concept of the 4_Towers project placed in the Urban Garden affirms the typology of residential verticals that has been neglected in the past 20 years. The towers, placed on a green base of a garden / park, allow a minimal coverage of the layout area, maximum impact of daylight and sunlight, increase ventilation and allow a view to all four sides of the world, all in attractive apartments with balconies.

This, 28th edition of Piran Days of Architecture are held on 20th and 21st of November, with the topic Reanimation of architecture. Instead of using more and more space, sources and energy, architecture should focus on restoration, renovation and reanimation of architecture, especially of disregarded and ignored architecture. The conference brings face to face eight different architectural viewpoints about the subject trying to point out that the essence of sustainable architecture is high-quality architectural design and individual moral responsibility. It is followed by a number of exhibitions and lectures and one of the lecturers is Saša Begović.

Sofia Architecture Festival is being held for the third consecutive year from 15th to 22nd October 2010. This year the festival consists of two modules - Forum and Open House. The theme is Being Peripheral. The festival is international, organized by the independent medium One Magazine. It is a platform for dialogue and exchange of ideas between people who are actively engaged in the problems of their environment. The festival?s aim is to build up a critical mass of urban scenarios which generate good architectural and social practices. As a part of the festival Saša Begović will hold a lecture called Peripheral Moment.

Croatian Designers Society awards were presented during the Exhibition of Croatian Design 0910 opening ceremony on September 21st. The award for best exhibition design/spatial graphics/signage was given to Damir Bralić, Lana Cavar, Nikola Đurek, Narcisa Vukojević, Sarah Baron Brljević and Hrvoje Živčić for signage and environmental graphics design of Zamet Centre in Rijeka. Three acknowledgements were given in the same category and one of them to authors Lana Cavar and Linked by Air (Tamara Maletić, Dan Michaelson) for the signage and environmental graphics design of Zagreb Dance Centre.

The long awaited construction of Hotel Lone started in the tourist area of Monte Mulini in Rovinj. The opening of the hotel for business is expected in the summer of 2011, and Croatia will have the first hotel listed in the prestigious international Design Hotels AG collection. 3LHD began designing the hotel in 2006, and dealt with the creation of hotel identity along with: Numen ForUse, fashion designers from studio I-gle, and conceptual artists Ivana Franke and Silvio Vujičić.

3LHDs project Zagreb Dance Centre has entered the finals of contractworld.award, one of the most important European architecture prizes. Of the total 524 registered projects in four categories, the Centre entered the finals of conversion category with 4 other projects. This category includes reconstruction of existing public, religious and industrial areas into new spaces through the use of conceptual, structural and physical changes, all for the purpose of sustainability.

3LHD in collaboration with the Canadian architecture office RDH was selected to design a new sports complex in downtown Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario. Port Lands Sports Centre consists of 4 hockey fields at the site of the old harbor area, which is to be transformed into a new neighborhood by the new Lower Don Lands plan. A vertical structure in which halls are located one above the other has been proposed to leave space for further urban development. The project was approved by the municipal authorities and design and construction are expected to continue next year.

Zamet Center is shortlisted on WAN architectural portal for the Civic Buildings 2010 award. The category loose definition ensures a vast range of buildings and Zamet entered the list of 5 chosen projects. The winner was Seaford Life Saving Club, Melbourne, Australia by Robert Simeoni Pty Ltd Architects.

3LHD's project of the Zagreb Dance Centre has been shortlisted in this year?s WAF New and old category in Barcelona. The presentation of the project on the festival will be held by Saša Begović. Category winners will be announced on November 4th, in 18h. All of the category nominees are published on the festival web page.

On 1st of August 2010 a new incarnation of 3LHD.com has been presented. We are continuing work on the site.

The sixth edition of Zagreb PKN and the first one organized outdoors will be held on July 1st in the courtyard of the club Mocvara (Trnjanski nasip bb). The edition will feature 12 presenters from different fields of interest and the indie/alter-rock DJ PER LE CLER will be responsible for the afterparty. The presenters are: Kristina Lenard (visual arts), Bead by Bead (first fair-trade company in Croatia), ROBA (fashion design), Dan D (urban culture), Dario Dević i Hrvoje Živčić (design), Goran Rako (architecture), Ivica Buljan (theatre), Davor Jadrijević (science), Elvis Krstulović i Iva Kovač (arts), GRAD - European Centre for Culture and Debate Belgrade (urban culture).

Polyclinic ST is shortlisted on WAN architectural portal awards in the healthcare category buildings. Five more projects were in competition for the award. The winner was Shenzen Third People's Infectious Disease Hospital in Shenzen by TRO Jung Brannen.

Ministry of culture has announced the winners of this year's Vladimir Nazor Awards for the best artistic accomplishments for literature, music, film, visual and applied arts, theatre and architecture and urbanism. 3LHD won the annual award for architecture and urbanism for their project Zamet Centre in Rijeka.

Polyclinic St is one of the projects competing for the WAN architectural portal awards in the healthcare category buildings. The shortlist will be announced on June 16th.

On the occasion of the 12th anniversary of the publication of Croatian daily newspaper Jutarnji list, a special edition was published with a number of guest editors. Young, promising people who made certain improvements in their business were invited as guest editors. One of the invited editors were 3LHD.
Each editor got two blank pages of Jutarnji list and the liberty to choose what would be the topic and who would be the authors of the articles. 3LHD center spread refers to the issue of returning to the city center, a kind of regeneration and contextual density of the city.

3LHDs Zamet Centre has won the Building of the Year 2009 Award for Sport Category from one of the world?s most famous architecture web pages ArchDaily.
All of the projects featured on the ArchDaily in the year 2009 were in competition and the readers? nominations shortlisted 65 projects in 13 categories.
The Building of the Year Award is given to the projects rated as best and most interesting by the ArchDaily readers.

Zamet Centre

The 5th PKN Zagreb will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Avenija Dubrovnik 17, this Saturday, February 20th with the beginning at 19:30 PM. Twelve Croatian creative people gathered to join the action in which another 70 PechaKucha cities around the world are organizing presentations on the same day to collect funds for the reconstruction of Haiti.

3LHDs project Zamet Centre was awarded with "Bernardo Bernardi award" as the most successful achievement in the field of interior design in 2009. at the Croatian Architects Association awards ceremony held in the Gradski vrt sports hall in Osijek on  December 15th 2009.
All the nominees and the award winning projects can be seen at the Annual Croatian Architects Exhibition that will be open until January 15th 2010. in Gradski Vrt hall in Osijek. The exhibition will be open in other Croatian cities throughout the year.

Croatian Association of Architects annually awards the most successful realizations of Croatian architects. From this year?s 145 applicants, two of the nominated works are realizations of 3LHD projects. Centre Zamet in Rijeka is nominated in 2 categories:  "Viktor Kovacic" award for the best architectural achievement and ?Bernardo Bernardi? award for best achievement in design and interior decoration. In this category the nominee is one more of the 3LHD work ? reconstruction of an old cinema into a Dance Center in Zagreb.
Award winners will be announced at the opening of the Annual exhibition of works of Croatian architects in 2009, on 15th December at 19:00h in the Teaching-sports hall in Gradski vrt in Osijek. Exhibition will remain open until 15.01.2010.godine.

3LHDs 15th birthday party was held in the recently opened Zagreb Dance Center on November 20th. We celebrated our 15th birthday with our dear friends, associates, clients.

The presentation of the IOC/IAKS Award and the IPC/IAKS Distinction will take place at the official opening of the 21st IAKS Congress in Cologne on 28th October 2009. 3LHD?s Sports Hall Bale is one of the Bronze medal winners for international sports facilities.
International Olympic Committee, The International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities and The  International Paralympics Committee (IPC) award the IOC/IAKS Award biannually to the best architectural realizations in sports and leisure facilities, and the IOC/IAKS distinction to the projects specially adapted for athletes and spectators with disabilities.
In the 20 year long tradition of IOC / IAKS awards, this year they received a record number of applications, 117 architectural realisations from 26 countries. 7 projects have been awarded with Gold, 9 with Silver and 8 with Bronze Medals. Another 4 projects received the Special Distinction, while the IPC/IAKS Distinction was awarded to 10 from 54 entries.

IAKS AWARD

The official and long expected opening ceremony of Zagreb Dance Center was held on October 26th. At the site of the old cinema Lika, in the courtyard of Ilica 10, with the project of reconstruction of the old cinema the team of 3LHD architects achieved a modern multi-purpose space of the new Dance Center.  With this project, the domestic dance scene will get its place in the city center and the possibility of continuous dance events throughout the year on a recognizable dance location. Zagreb Dance Center will offer performances, many professional training programs and special programs for the audience.

The opening ceremony of the Centre will be on Thursday, September 10th 2009. and the sports hall will be open for public from 17:30. Located in the Rijeka's quarter Zamet, the new centre has a floor area of 16830m2, and houses a sports hall, local administration offices, sports and commercial facilities and a parking garage with 250 spaces.

The selection for the 44th Zagreb Salon - architecture has been announced. The exhibition selector, Hans Ibelings, has chosen 100 of the 556 applied projects to participate in the exhibition. All of the selected projects are candidates for the 44th Salon awards. 3LHD will be presented with 5 projects made from 2006 to 2009: House J2, Kozala cemetery - entrance square and service building, Polyclinic ST, Riva Split Waterfront and Spaladium Arena.
The exhibition will be held in Zagreb, from October 1st to October 25th in pavilion no.19 of the Zagreb Fair.

Third edition of PechaKucha Night:Zagreb will be held in Rijeka, as a special visit to Hartera festival. The presentations begin at 8:30PM, at the ex Tvornica papira in Ružićeva bb. Memorial Bridge is one of 20 projects awarded by the honorary members of WA community in the 4th cycle of World Architecture Community 20+10+x Architecture Awards. The aim of the WA Community Awards is to highlight and publish remarkable projects that might otherwise remain unnoticed by the international public but have the potential to inspire exciting questions about contemporary architectural discourse.
WA is an online community initiated by Suha Özkan and 200+ invited Honorary Members, and a growing number of registered members.

World Architecture Community

By unanimous decision jury decided to award the project of 3LHD architects amongst 26 competition works in public competition for architectural and urban design of commercial centre Miramarska-Bednjanska in Zagreb.

Concept of awarded project stems from forming a unified structure that will reconcile the surrounding urban matrix and meet the program requirements. Two interacting volumes, the tower with 20 floors and the lower part of the 5 floors, united the planned goals and achieve high quality relations with the neighbouring buildings. Simple and at the same time very attractive effect of designing the facade by pulling in and out the glass modules, the building of business centre Miramare has gained recognition, uniqueness and special value.

Sports Hall Bale and 3LHD architects were awarded 15.05.2009 in Pučišća on Island of Brač with Jadrankamen award "Stone in architecture" for 2009. The award is given biannually based on the overall evaluation of professional work, or a particular project, and this year for an innovative way of using architectural stone.
The jury consisting of eminent Croatian architects and Jadrankamen representatives, Dinko Kovačić, Nikola Bašić, Nenad Fabijanić, Nikola Popić, Emil Šverko, Velibor Jukić and Jurica Tomaš awarded Sports Hall Bale putting it in context of promising, as much aesthetic as well as pragmatic future use of stone in our region and circumstances.

The second edition of Zagreb PKN will be held on April 9th at Tvornica Katran (Radnička cesta 27, next to Zavrtnica), starting at 8pm. This time the presenters are: architect Leo Modrčin, graphic designers Dora Budor and Maja Cule, directing-dramaturgy tandem Anica Tomić and Jelena Kovačić, sculptor Ivan Fijolić, fashion designer Silvio Vujičić, bureau of contemporary art praxis - Kontejner, Archisquad - architectural NGO group, comic drawer and illustrator Goran Sudžuka, product designer Marko Pavlović, transitive-fiction theatre - TRAFIK and Complaints Choir Zagreb.

Riva Split Waterfront is one of 20 projects awarded in the 3rd cycle of World Architecture Community 20+10+x Architecture Awards. The aim of the WA Community Awards is to highlight and publish remarkable projects that might otherwise remain unnoticed by the international public but have the potential to inspire exciting questions about contemporary architectural discourse.

World Architecture Community Awards 3rd cycle

On the public international competition for urban development of Duilovo area in Split, 3LHD and Dražen Pejković won the joint 3rd prize along with two other teams.
City of Split as an investor and The Association of Architects Split (DAS) as an organizer announced that the 1. and 2. prize will not be given, but three equal 3rd prizes. Considering the complexity of the intervention the jury proposed a workshop for all three awarded teams to attend and work together on the further development of the project.
Project idea made by 3LHD and Dražen Pejković is to enrich the southern part of Split with urban infrastructure regulation matrix and reaffirm the possibility of merging that part of the city with the shoreline.

3LHD architects won the first prize on the invited competition for a medical center with additional facilities in Split.
The future polyclinic will be situated on Firule, one of Split´s most enjoyable living environments. The immediate vicinity of a hospital complex, the sea and fresh air are some of its greatest advantages. The simple and pragmatic placement of program determined functions did not affect the buildings visual effect. The façade designed from horizontal bands is inspired by Ivo Radic's "briss soleil" - one of the most recognizable elements of Split's modern architecture.

3LHD architects were one of the nominated for the prestigious Mies Van Der Rohe award 2009 with Sports Hall Bale and Riva Split Waterfront projects. The award was established 1987. and is awarded biannually for "conceptually, esthetically and technically excellent" architectural accomplishments.

In the organization of Dubrovnik´s Architects Society, Marko Dabrović and Silvije Novak will give a lecture with the theme "Dubrovnik projects". The lecture will be held on February 6th 2009 in Dubrovnik city hall, starting at 6PM.

On Monday the 19th 2009 Croatian Architects Association awarded the best authors for architectural realizations in the year 2008. 3LHD's project House J2 was awarded with "Drago Galić award", for best residential architecture realization in 2008.

On the 15th of January, beginning at 20pm PechaKucha Night will be held for the first time ever in Zagreb in the organisation of Rasadnik Bruketa&Zinic, 3LHD, Tina Fras and Lana Cavar.
Zagreb will join the global community of 165 other cities licensed to organize these unprofitable events. The event will be held at Kino Klub SC presenting Ivana Popovic, Ivan Kozaric, Mario Kovac, Platforma 9.81, Vili Matula, Nicole Hewitt, Numen, Studio UP, Rafaela Drazic i Simon Bogojevic Narath.

Today on 27th December 2008 Spaladium Arena, project of 3LHD architects, for the first time was presented to public. The opening ceremony was celebrated in Christmas concert with many distinguished Croatian and international musicians.

Sasa Begovic and Marko Dabrovic presented a few of 3LHD projects on COAC's XXXI workshop with theme: Interventions in architectural heritage held on December 13th - reconstruction and reuse of two old cinemas in Zagreb city centre into a theatre and a dance centre and project of Riva Split waterfront, both interventions in historic architectural environment.

Today's presentation of Spaladium center promotional film produced by 3LHD, held in TPN company premises, announced the opening of Spaladium Arena on 27^th of December 2008, as well as further development of the project, building of business tower, shopping center and largest public garage in Split.

Award giving ceremony held on 30^th of October in Monterrey, Mexico, announced winners of this year's XVII CEMEX Building Award. Riva Split Waterfront as Croatian representative in category Infrastructural buildings has won 3^rd place.

Sports Hall Bale won the first prize in Sports category at the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona on October 23rd 2008. Next to the strong competitors such as the Wembley arena, Water Cube Olympic Swimming pool and the Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Centre, the small sports hall from Istrian town Bale has won the harts of the jury. Sports Hall Bale is an example of contemporary architecture well embedded into traditional context. The local dry stone wall motif has been reinterpreted in new technology - RC prefabricated elements used for the whole surfacing of the sports hall. Being the second largest building after the church, besides as a sports venue, sports hall is used as a public facility for various social gatherings and community meetings. According to the jury quality in architecture exists at all scales, so they did not consider that physical size was crucial to a project's success, nor was iconic status or global recognition. The most important question to ask was this: which project, irrespective of its scale, can have the greatest positive impact on the life of the community that it serves, no matter how small or how big that community. By winning this prize Sports Hall Bale entered the competition for the World Building of the Year award, along with 16 other category winners. The award ceremony will be held today at 8:00 PM, and followed by World Architecture Festival closing ceremony.

A short presentation of the Sports and Business complex Spaladium Center will be held at the 6th Architects day; which is a part of the 13th International SASO fair in Split. The presentation will be held by architect Danira Matošić Matičević, at 17:00h.

It has been a year since the project Spaladium Center was started in Split. First phase of construction includes planned finalization of Spaladium Arena. First public event in new Arena will be the New Year's concert on 27^th December 2008, and in January it will host the opening matches of the World Handball Championship 2009.

The exhibition New Trajectories: Contemporary Architecture in Croatia & Slovenia is opened from September 8 - October 19, 2008 at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. On display in Gund Hall Gallery are works from 13 offices of new generations of Croatian and Slovenian architects.Over the last ten years, the economies of Croatia and Slovenia "in transition from communist Yugoslavia to capitalist countries" allowed for a flourishing design community to emerge without the pressures of a demanding market. As a result architects have developed exceptional work that is both innovative and charged with the legacy of their own architectural heritage. Regardless of the differences between the two countries and the design practices, these architects can be situated at the core of contemporary architectural production. 3LHD is presented with public space projects such as Memorial Bridge in Rijeka and Riva Split Waterfront, as well as public buildings, Sports Hall Bale and Sports Center Zamet in Rijeka.

European Prize for Urban Public Space 2008

European Prize for European Public Space 2008 is an exhibition that presents the results of the best works and solutions from the competition that has been announced biennially since 2000, under the patronage of The Center for Contemporary Culture, Barçelona. During this period, 340 cities from 34 European countries have participated and presented their projects, five of which were awarded.  As one of the finalist for 2008 Riva Split waterfront, project by 3LHD architects is currently exhibited in Museum of Applied Arts in Belgrade.

3LHD is this year nominee for The Iakov Chernikhov International Prize. The Prize was created to stimulate creativity in the field of architecture aimed at solving current social and cultural problems; to confirm humanistic principles in the art of architecture and also to support experimental, educational and research works in the field of innovative architecture and town planning. The Prize will be awarded every two years to masters of contemporary architecture for the best architectural concept.

3LHD is one of the shortlisted studios nominated for the first edition of BSI Swiss Architectural Award 2008. The prize giving ceremony will be held on November 13th in Mendrisio with the support of the Federal Office for Culture in Bern and the Accademia di architettura of the Universit della Svizzera Italiana in Mendrisio. The prize is given to architects under 50 years of age, of any nationality, ?that contributed, thanks to their work, to contemporary architectural culture showing a particular sensitivity towards environmental balance?.
Among other shortlisted candidates are Adjaye Associates, Ălvaro Rocha, OFFICE dA, Shuhei Endo, Antonio Jimenez Torrecillas, the NEXTenterprise.

Projects of Sports Hall Bale and Riva Split are participating in the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona this autumn. Among 722 projects from 63 countries Sports Hall Bale has been shortlisted in the Sport category. Judging panels comprised of prestigious names in the world of architecture will choose the building of the year on 24 October.

The theme of EXPO 2008 is "Water and Sustainable Development". After a very successful exhibition in Japan 2005 with slogan "A drop of water - a grain of salt", Croatia will be presented with the project by 3LHD architects and photographer Damir Fabijanic. The concept is based on the idea, plan and metaphor of a salt pan. Croatian pavilion is more an event than architecture, based on visual and tactile experience. Special effects take visitors to a virtual tour of Croatian see, nature and cultural heritage.
The exhibition stays open till 14 September 2008.

On Friday, June 6 2008 in Hotel Le Meridien Lav, Split project Riva Split Waterfront was elected as a Croatian competitor for the XVII CEMEX BUILDING AWARD in Mexico. The award is one of the most prestigious world recognitions in the field of building. It is given in three categories: Housing, Institutional and Industrial Building, Infrastructure projects with special awards Sustainable Building and Accessibility.

Maistra's Hotel Lone in Rovinj, Croatia planned to be opened in summer 2009 is listed in the prestigious international selection Design Hotel AG. This is the first Croatian hotel to be part of the world renowned brand. 3LHD collaborated with numerous acclaimed young Croatian designers and artists in developing the project.

At the City of Zagreb's tender for the preliminary design of the Bundek Bridge, the Croatian Society of Structural Engineers awarded the 2nd place prize to a joint project of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Studio 3LHD. Professor Zlatko Šavor and Gordana Hrelja from the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Zagreb and architects from 3LHD collaborated on this project. The bridge is 664 meters long and 35 meters wide. The main goal was to design a bridge that, in the wider urban architectural context of the river Sava, would create a new gateway into the city that would be easily recognizable but at the same time have an unobtrusive identity. One of the main elements of this identity is the design of tram tracks which, unlike other bridges, run through the bridge's insides and not on its surface.

At the tender for the preliminary design of the City stadium on Kajzerica, Studio 3LHD received a special award.  As one of the invited authors, 3LHD offered a design of a contemporary soccer arena inspired by the ancient times, the shape of a "kajzerica" bun and the soccer phenomenon of a rotating ball.

Riva Split has been declared a finalist for the 5th European Prize for Urban Public Space. This Prize is an initiative that the Centre de Cultura Contempor?nia de Barcelona (CCCB) co-organises with the Architecture Foundation of London (AF), the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W), la Cité de l´Architecture et du Patrimoine of Paris, the Suomen Rakennustaiteen Museo of Helsinki (SRM) and the Nederlands Architectuurinstituut of Rotterdam (NAI). The Prize aims to foster and recognise the process of recovering the public dimension of urban spaces in Europe, as well as its capacity for social inclusion and democracy-building. This year, 176 projects from twenty-six European countries presented for the Prize.

Swiss Architekturforum invited 3LHD to participate in an open discussion about contemporary European architectural production. The forum has taken place in Biel every year since 1987. This year Swiss audiences will have an opportunity to see works by Totan Kuzaembaev from Moscow, BIG from Copenhagen, UNDEND from Zuerich, as well as 3LHD.

Mayor of Rijeka Vojko Obersnel and Silvije Novak from Studio 3LHD signed a contract for delivery of project documentation for the area of the bus terminal Zapadna Žabica. The project plan will be delivered by November 2008 and works will begin in the first quarter of 2009 upon delivery of the complete project documentation. 
The project for the new bus station Zapadna Žabica in Rijeka was chosen through a public tender at the end of 2005 and Studio 3LHD won the first prize. The new bus station will consist of three parts: a bus terminal with 18 platforms, a garage for buses and facilities for travelers, above-ground several stories high and a 25,000 m2 garage with 900 parking spaces and a 10,000 m2 business-commercial area. This project provides a central "pedestrian island" that allows easy access to the platforms without interfering with traffic. In addition, the project enables removal of all parking spaces from the waterfront and thus completely surrenders it to the pedestrians.

The Biennale of Macedonian Architecture Bimas 2008 will be held from March 14 to 28, 2008. This two-week event will present this year´s architectural accomplishments as well as challenges of contemporary architecture to the professional as well as the broader general audience. During these two weeks many discussions, lectures and exhibitions will be held and they will all reflect contemporary architectural issues. Two Croatian architectural studios, Randić-Turato and Studio 3LHD, have been invited to this year´s Biennale and will present their projects. During the Biennale our architects will hold a lecture and prepare an exhibition that will present their projects; Randić-Turato´s project include the School on Krk, LAPIDARIUM in Novigrad, Business and residential complex in Rijeka, ADRIS´ building in Zagreb and the auditorium on Trsat, while Studio 3LHD´s projects include the Split Waterfront, Bale sports hall, J2 house in Zagreb, Hotel Lone in Rovinj and many others. On March 24, Maroje Mrduljaš will hold a lecture about contemporary Croatian architecture within the exhibition Contemporary Croatian Architecture.Besides the presentation of projects by the two Croatian architectural studios Randić-Turato and 3LHD, Andrija Rusan and Aleksandar Predojević will present the magazine Oris.

Promotion of the book Bale Shoreline - Spatial Planning Development Study will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 8 pm in Zagreb Architects Association, Trg bana Josipa Jelačića 3/I.
The Study of Bale shoreline is the result of collaboration between the Bale municipality, Association of citizens Mon Perin, studio 3LHD and experts in tourism, protection of cultural heritage, marketing and finances. With a team of experts, 3LHD prepared this spatial planning study and offered a new concept of a tourist product, prepared an investment estimate as well as the feasibility study of tourist projects on Bale shoreline.

At the end of 2007, the building site of Zamet multi-purpose center was opened in Rijeka. Along with a communal center and commercial space, the city of Rijeka will get a new sports arena with stands that can be adjusted to the number of viewers as well as the type of event.

At the international conference held on November 8 and 9, 2007 at the prestigious ETH University in Zurich, some of the participants will be Croatian architects: Saša Begović, a partner in 3LHD, Aleksandar Laslo, prof. Karin Šerman (from the University of Architecture in Zagreb) and theoretician Maroje Mrduljaš. The topic of the conference is "Culture of leisure and architecture in East and West Europe during the 1960s, 1970s and today". The main goal is to draw attention to the social, political and ideological implications of the concept of "leisure" and how such things are expressed in architecture and art. Our architects will hold a series of lectures and present Croatian architectural projects from the past as well as several examples of tourism-related projects completed in the past few years.  Within this conference architect Saša Begović will hold a lecture titled "Three projects on tourism and leisure" and present new projects from 3LHD studio (Hotel Lone/Rovinj, Riva/Split,study Bale/Vale). The initiators of this conference are the Chair for Theory of Architecture professor Ăkos Moravinszky, Dr and professor Bernhard Langer. ETH University in Zurich holds the 5th place of the world's best universities (Harvard University being the top one). Its reputation is additionally strengthened by the fact that five of its alumni won the Nobel Prize. Due to that, presentation of Croatian architects at this international conference is a great professional recognition for them.

After almost one year of construction works the new entrace square and service building of the Kozala Cemetery in Rijeka are opened to the public. The opening took place on November 1, All Saints´ Day.

On Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at 7 pm architects from the 3LHD studio will hold a lecture at the architectural department of the Technical University in Darmstadt in Germany. The lecture will focus on recent 3LHD?s projects and will try to present contemporary creative processes in architecture to German students.

Saša Begović will give a lecture on Leisure and Tourism in Contemporary Croatia to ETH Zürich students visiting Croatian coast.

"The Lora" sports and business center, which will include a multifunctional sports hall for the purpose of hosting the World Handball Championship in 2009, was presented today to the public of Split and Croatia. This is a joint project of the Konstruktor and Dalekovod companies and the Civil Engineering Institute of Croatia. The project was presented by the mayor of Split, Ivan Kuret, director of the "Sport City TPN" Consortium Vice Dodig, the chief projector of the Civil Engineering Institute Dražen Pejković and architect Saša Begović from the architecture Studio 3LHD.
The "Lora" sports and business complex is situated in the area of the former military harbor in Split and it will consist of a big sports hall of 27.000 m2, commercial space of a total of 35.000 m2, parking space of 44.000 m2 and a business tower of 28.000 m2. The central part of the complex is a multifunctional sports hall which will have the capacity to seat 12.000 people. The hall will be used for sporting as well as entertainment and business events. The complex is based on the design project by Studio 3LHD that won the tender. The awarded work distinguishes itself by architectural characteristics such as simplicity of lines combined with the Mediterranean ambiance of a high atrium, narrow passages and shadow.
Vice Dodig, director of "Sport City TPN", announced the start of construction of a 140 mil EUR complex that will be finished in two stages; the sports part by December 30, 2008 and the commercial part of the complex by December 2010. Representatives of the City, Konstruktor and Studio 3LHD jointly confirmed that the sports hall will be finished by the deadline and thus Split will be able to host the international handball elite.
Mayor Ivan Kuret pointed out that this project is one of the principal investments in Split following the Mediterranean Games, which took place almost 30 years ago. He added that the construction of the multi-purpose hall will put Split on the map of international cities with high-quality sports infrastructure.
The entire Croatian handball team and representatives of the Croatian Handball Association were present at the presentation of the future complex that took place at its future location.

2nd Congress of Croatian Architects - RESPONS-ABILITY, under the auspices of Mr. Stjepan Mesić, President of the Republic of Croatia, which takes place in Opatija from October 18 to 20, is organized by the Croatian Architects´ Association (CAA) and Architects Section of the Croatian Chamber of Architects and Engineers in Civil Engineering.
Congress of Croatian Architects, lasting from October 18 to 20, is a triennial manifestation that deals with contemporary architectural challenges and aims to convey professional discussions to a wider audience. It includes lectures, panel discussions as well as three architectural exhibitions. (Exhibitions are European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe Award, Yearly Exhibition of Projects by Croatian Architects, and Project Zagreb: Transition as Condition, Strategy, and Practice, Harvard University). About 600 participants are expected at the Congress.
During three days, the selected lecturers will present their answers to the Congress topic and work methods. The panel discussions will focus on topics such as Politics - Architecture, Architectural Policies, NL - HR Practice (discussion organised in collaboration with the Netherlands Architecture Institute, NAI), City Planning - Urban Strategies. The program of discussions about architecture PUBLIC INTERVIEW 1:1 begins tonight, Tuesday October 9 at 8 pm at the Zagreb Architects Association with special guest Marijan Hržić, PhD, B. Sc. in architecture and the interview's moderator Saša Begović, B. Sc. in architecture, who is a 3LHD partner.
The opening series of PUBLIC DIALOGUE will host prominent Croatian architects such as Nikola Filipović, Bogdan Budimirov, Boris Duplančić and Ante Rožić who, through dialogues with the moderator and the audience, will express their opinions and talk about professional experiences in the areas of urban architectural theory and praxis.
The dialogue will be an open debate between the guest, the moderator and the audience and should enable an exchange of opinions between architecture experts, which in a form of a cultural interview raises awareness about contemporary architectural topics - the relationship between architecture and technology, lodging issues, problems and specific phenomena in regards to continental and coastal tourism, the relationships between artistic concepts, design and architecture, education and architecture, architectural trends and politics, etc.

Saša Begović gave a lecture on the eight day workshop "REALITY CHIC" about the interrelation of architecture and fashion today.

In the Chinese city Xi´an, former capital and international tourist destination that includes the tomb of the Terracotta Warriors, Croatian architectural studio 3LHD won the 1st prize at the international architectural competition The New Silk Road Cultural Park! The city of Xi´an, Chinese capital during the rule of 13 dynasties, wants to become the cultural center of China and in 2006 opened an architectural competition for a theme park. This competition is part of a larger project called The New Silk Road Park whose goal is to explore influence of global communication on intertwining cultures, because Xi´an was a former starting point of the ancient Silk Road and one of the places where Europe and Asia have been in close touch and where they communicated to each other. The architectural task at the location of the new park with a lake was to come up with and build 9 different areas with 9 accompanying houses - cultural and historical zones - that would represent 9 regions influenced by the Silk Road, from Europe (Western, Eastern, Mediterranean and Scandinavia), across Asia Minor (Turkish and Hebrew zone), to Persia and finally China. Architects from the studio 3LHD won the 1st prize for the region of Eastern Europe. Therefore, Croatian architects found themselves in the midst of eminent architects such as Massimiliano Fuksas, Snohetta Architects, Nox, Atelier Big City, and Antoine Predock.

3LHD gave a lecture called 13/150 as a part of Completely Different 10, a series of lectures on architecture, in the Zagreb Architects´ Association (DAZ) on Tuesday, 5 June 2007, at 20:00 hours.

The Croatian Architects´ Association (CAA) published a monograph dedicated to the architect Ivan Vitić in December 2006. Then CAA started the initiative to renovate the Komiža House of Culture on the island of Vis. It is one of the favorite projects of Vitić and one of the pinnacles of his architectural career. The building now needs to be thoroughly renovated. A special web site has been opened for the donations in the manner of popular portals. Since Ivan Vitić is one of the architects of the Croatian post-WWII modernism who inspired whole generations of architects and students, Studio 3LHD has decided to participate in the initiative with a donation.

The International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam is a two-year event gathering architects, urban planners, landscape architects, theorists and students from the entire world to present their knowledge and experience to the general public. The Rotterdam Biennale is unlike others because it does not only present projects, but focuses primarily on the younger generation of architects. It was initiated by Kristin Feireiss, the former director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI), in 1999. The third edition of the Biennale will open on May 29, 2007. This year´s topic is the development of modern cities and the responsibility for their future. The exhibition called Mare Nostrum Revisited includes Croatian architects with Croatian Archipelago New Lighthouses (CANL), a project presented at the 2nd Biennale, which focused on the development problems of the cities located on or near water.CANL is a joint project of the Berlage Institute from Rotterdam and the Croatian Architects´ Association. It is focused on the process of the development of the cities and landscapes along the Croatian coast as a part of the Mediterranean. CANL is financed by the Dutch Foreign Ministry within Matra, a program supporting social changes in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. 3LHD will be joined by Platforma 981, Studio UP, de Architekten CIE (HR), Ante Kuzmanić d.o.o., and Produkcija 004, with their projects. Within the program of Mare Nostrum, the architect Marko Dabrović will give a lecture about a project of Studio 3LHD, entitled "Transformation of the Old Dubrovnik Hospital into a University Campus". Vedran Mimica is this year´s exhibition curator and project initiator.

On the Day of the City of Split, May 7, the Riva (waterfront) will shine in all its glory as the most important public stage in the city, the living room of all the citizens and visitors, a showcase of social life and a mirror of the Mediterranean character. After the competition was won by the project of the 3LHD architectural studio, the implementation of that demanding task took one year. This essential symbol of Split has been completely reconstructed for the first time in its history; now it has a regulated infrastructure, ordered aesthetics and a contextually framed space. The project included changing the entire infrastructure and urban furnishings, cleaning and revaluing the Palace façade, arranging the floor surface etc. Also, the numerous and diverse café terraces have been given a uniform appearance adapted to the Mediterranean feel of the city. 3LHD, wanting to stress the atmosphere, has planned green islands along the Riva, as parks with nothing but Mediterranean plants, designed by the landscape architect Ines Ardić.The Riva has been covered with special concrete slabs measuring 150x150 cm, which are the best and ecologically most acceptable solution in this climate. This project has benefited from the participation of top experts, around 120 of them. Moreover, a significant part of urban furnishings has been designed and implemented in Croatia. The design of urban furnishings was undertaken by the company Numen. Unique benches have been set up on the Riva; it has the first functional LED lighting in the world. The tables and chairs, produced by a renowned Italian firm, were presented at the most important world exhibition of new furniture, Salone del Mobile in Milan.The design of urban furnishings is a result of contemporary details and traditional (generally accepted) forms. The benches are an extension of the paving matrix into the third dimension, with the functional addition of the wooden seat. The new lighting was designed by the company Novalux. The entire project amounted to 62 million kuna. This project gave Split a modern Riva, while keeping its traditional charm of a city with rich history.

The new theater in Zagreb will be opened in Ilica 90 (former Apolo Cinema) at 12 hours, on Tuesday, March 27. The city of Zagreb gave the chance to a team of young architects from the 3LHD studio to work on cultural projects. The first project was the renovation and conversion of the old Apolo Cinema into a modern theater space in step with the global trends. Therefore, after a long time, Zagreb was enriched by another cultural space, which can measure up to the theaters of the world. The acting troupe of Histrion will use it as their permanent stage, finally finding a home after 30 years. The 3LHD architectural team used the old cinema structure, without touching the outside appearance of the protected building, and created a completely new and (in future, we hope) indispensable cultural spot in Zagreb. In parallel with this project, 3LHD is working on another renovation: the old Lika Cinema is being turned into a new dance center, providing a space for the large dance scene. That project is also expected to end this year, so there will be two new, modern and important cultural spaces in the city center, trying to help Zagreb to be included in the EU list of the European Cities of Culture.

3LHD was shortlisted for the WAN internet portal?s prestigious "House of the Year" award with a project of a family house in the northern part of Zagreb. The award was designed to encourage excellence in architectural profession; a jury that decides on it consists of world famous architects and experts (Richard Coleman, Julian Höner, Pierre d'Avoine, Yuli Toh, Christina Seilern). This year, the jury had the difficult task of selecting 25 projects as a wider selection between works submitted from around the world - from Australia to Poland, and then short listing only 6 from whom the winner will be announced on February 15th. The criteria were originality, innovation, formal and spatial qualities, sustainability, the context in which they are located and client testimonials. The shortlisted were The Long House - Keith Williams Architects - Great Britain; Home / Office - Mario Castelló arquitecto - Formentera Island, Spain; House J2 - 3LHD - Zagreb, Croatia; Salt Point House - Thomas Phifer + Partners - New York, USA; Acrylic House - Takeshi Hosaka Archictects, Japan; House J - Kevin Fellingham Architecture, Simonstown, South Africa.

German publisher daab included 3LHD in it´s newest book - "Young European Architects". The book provides insight and an overview of the architectural scene in Europe, and with the aid of portraits and short explanatory texts, presents the featured agencies and architects and their websites. An index with contact information of the architects is enclosed.

On Tuesday, 19th of December, Saša Begović will give lecture at Architecture Faculty of Split University. The "12" lecture presents cross-section of 3LHD architects´ work, ranging from the acknowledged realisations to latest, unpublished works. The Split lecture is extending lively lecturing activity from founding partners of 3LHD.

3LHD has won the first prize on the competition for the design of the new Lone Hotel in Rovinj, in one of the most attractive tourist resorts on the Adriatic Monte Mulini, Rovinj. The new five-star hotel will replace the existing Montauro Hotel in the Monte Mulini area and will be one of the first completely new hotels in Croatia in the last 15 years.The project for a building of highest hotel standards with 250 residence units, two restaurants, a brasserie, five bars, a conference and a wellness centre, over six levels, will be a big challenge for the office in the next few years.The design team was motivated by the following factors: location in the park, a specific terrain with significant height differences within the site, as well as the immediate vicinity of the Eden Hotel with its specific aesthetic characteristics. The ground plan in the shape of the letter Y has been defined by the elevations of the terrain, while the height differences in the interior provided for creating a vertical central lobby, the main axis round which all the facilities are centred. All the levels are multi-functional, thus improving the dynamics of daily use.One of the design objectives was to create a powerful and unique visual identity, ranging from the external design of the building to the interior planning of the facilities.

On 21 and 22 October, the Sixth Oris Days will be held in Zagreb. This is an annual architectural symposium, bringing together the most prominent names of modern architecture and town planning, and this year the moderator is Saša Begović, partner and manager of Studio 3LHD. The two day session consisting of public lectures is an opportunity for two thousand participants to get an insight into the work and creative concept of the lecturers such as Adam Caruso (Caruso St John Architects, Great Britain), Elke Delugan Meissl and Roman Delugan (Delugan-Meissl Associated Architects, Austria), Manuel Gausa (Spain), Hans Hollein (Austria), Jordi Badia (Spain), Han TĹąmertekin (Turkey), Reiner de Graaf (OMA-AMO, The Netherlands), Massimiliano Fuksas (Italy). Every year the organizers provide the opportunity for one author or team from Croatia and Slovenia to present themselves, and this year they are Nenad Fabijanić and Jurij Kobe.The company Arhitekst, publisher of Oris review and organizer of the symposium, will also publish a special issue Oris 40 for the occasion of the Oris Days 2006, presenting recent designs and realisation of this year?s lecturers.

Among the works selected by Manuel Gausa, Spanish architect and urban planner for the 41^st Zagreb Salon dedicated to architecture and urbanism, are three designs by studio 3LHD. The Croatian pavilion at the EXPO in Japan 2005, the school sports hall at Bale, Istria, and the Bus terminal in Rijeka are among the designs and projects created between 2003 and 2006, the period considered for the competition. The selection was made in four themed units defined by the selector - about cities, about objects, about landscape and about sensations.The organizer, Croatian Architects Association, entrusted the artist Darko Fritz with the layout and visual identity of the exhibition. He decided to remove the whole presentation from the usual galleries and museums and display it on the central Zagreb square.The opening of the Salon and the official part will be held in the Gradska kavana (Town Café) on 19 October, where the winners Salon and the Internet competition will be announced. The exhibition lasts until 19 November and is accompanied by fringe events, a one-man exhibition of last year?s winner, presentations and panels.

Studio 3LHD won the first prize on the competition for the design of a new business tower at the crossroads of Ljubljanska Avenija and Selska cesta in Zagreb. The studio won with the project for a skyscraper 123 metres tall, the tallest in Croatia, and for the urban planning of the immediate surrounding.The idea of the work is based on identifying the problem of the lack of public urban space. The analysis of the site showed the existence of two matrices - a modern urban and the relics of the rural which has been absorbed by the city space, showing that neither model has enough quality public space. The 123 Tower will have the state-of-the-art DIAGRID structure. This is a diagonal grid, the structure concept distinguished by maximum strength, safety and cost effectiveness. DIAGRID is a framework construction on the perimeter of the building, creating a triangular structure with diagonal bearing beams and columns. The 123 Tower will be the first building in Zagreb to use this structural concept.

The New Split Waterfront design by the Studio 3LHD was exhibited among 70 world designs at the major exhibition "The Good Life: New Public Spaces for Recreation" in New York.
The exhibition "THE GOOD LIFE - NEW PUBLIC SPACES FOR RECREATION" was opened in New York on Thursday, September 7, 2006. Studio 3LHD was invited by the Van Alen Institute from New York to participate with its design for the Split waterfront. This work was included in the 70 outstanding architectural designs from all over the world, which, according to Zoë Ryan, Senior curator of the Institute and the exhibition curator, re-define public urban space for the 21^st century. Having introduced themselves at the OPEN exhibition in 2003 with their design and realisation of the Memorial Bridge in Rijeka, the architects from 3LHD received again the invitation from one of the world?s most respectable institutions to present their work. This is how the city of Split with its paradigmatic space ranked with cities like Barcelona, London, New York and Rio de Janeiro, and the studio architects with the most renowned colleagues from all over the world.The exhibition deals with the reinvention of urban public spaces, meeting the requirement of leisure time and recreation and will present how the most popular paradigms of free time in the 21^st century - recreation, entertainment, education and relaxation - are converted in everyday physical reality of the built environment. Seventy new designs from all over the world will also present selected outstanding architects, landscape designers and multi-disciplinary artists.A diverse design group studies five main topics - Entertainment city, Health city, 24-hour city, Well-connected city, and Culture city, showing how such spaces play a major role in raising the quality of daily life and or the urban regeneration. The exhibition will display significant already built structures, minor interventions and public works of art, both by well-known and by promising architects, designers, and artists. Together with 3LHD, among the other participants there are Abalos&Herreros, Studio Acconci, David Adjaye, Diller Scofidio + Zenfro, Martha Schwartz, Shop Architects, West 8, Stan Allen Architects and others. Apart from the Split waterfront, among other designs are also the New York Highline and the London Idea Store, the South African SOMOHO (Soweto Mountain of Hope), the Manguinhos complex from Rio de Janeiro.

The exhibition "New Lighthouses of the Croatian Adriatic" was opened at the Zagreb gallery of "Klovićevi Dvori" on 20 June. This was also the occasion to present the catalogue of the same name. The exhibited works were created as part of the project of the Berlage Institute from Rotterdam and the Association of Croatian Architects.The project "New Lighthouses of the Croatian Adriatic" are concentrated on planning the Croatian coastline, while respecting the premises of conservation, sustainable development and transparency in creating and decision making. These principle guidelines were realized in the solutions for seven specific and demanding locations: the Labin underground town, the Omišalj stone quarry, the penitentiary of Goli otok, the interwoven city and university facilities and spaces in Zadar and Dubrovnik, the multi-purpose space of Dugi Rat, and the redefined theatre building in Stari Grad.The architects of the Studio 3LHD studied the Dubrovnik location. After a critical observation of the current situation and the values of the site, the study revitalizes the deserted hospital site, by creating a public educational facility within the nature park. Thus this "lost" space becomes the nucleus/lighthouse promoting a new aspect of intellectual tourism.The exhibition and the book present the process of the project development from the moment of making the programme and applying for funding from the Matra programme of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to the presentation of the initial phase of the project location development, created in close cooperation between the architects and representatives of the local communities. The projects presented at the exhibition and in the book define the initial proposals which will be further developed as the projects continue, and also serve as a basis for streamlining the discussions about how to prepare the sites to be developed and how to define their purpose, with the objective to create the final proposal included in the zoning and physical planning documentation.The seminar "The Mediterranean As It Could Be" was held a day after, on 21 June. It gathered architects interested experts and representatives of local government from the seven locations included in the project. The seminar focussed on discussions about new forms of tourist offer, public-private partnership in construction projects on the coast and the development of university as one of the content-related guidelines.

The Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana hosted the "Ljubljana Oris Days" on 17 June 2006; this is an architectural symposium which for several years now has brought together architects, students of architecture, and those professionally connected to architecture.The one-day gathering presented five authors and studios, including the Studio 3LHD. Saša Begović gave a lecture "3LHD eXperience, 1994 - 1006 overview". The Studio presented the overview of its work since their establishment to the present day, as well as the current projects, with the stress of the design and the layout of the Split waterfront ? the Riva. Together 3LHD, Caramel Architekten (Vienna, Austria), Elias Torres (Barcelona, Spain), Maruša Zorec (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and Wolfgang Tschapeller (Vienna, Austria) also presented their work and their view of architecture.The Oris Days in Zagreb have been organised by the Arhitekst company since 2001, and the Ljubljana gathering is the continuation of the concept where the visual presentations of the work by renowned world authors and their lectures have the objective to educate and exchange ideas.

Studio 3LHD is the winner of this year's Bernardo Bernardi Award for the best achievement in architectural and interior design in 2005, awarded by the Croatian Architects Association.  The winning design of the Croatian pavilion for the World Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan, is a joint project of the Studio 3LHD, Damir Fabijanić and Dalibor Martinis. The award was presented at the opening of the annual exhibition of the projects by Croatian architects Association, on 16 June, at the Gliptoteka museum of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb. The award was presented by Croatian president Stjepan Mesić.  The Croatian pavilion not only attracted the attention at the World Expo 2005 in Japan, but was also recognized by experts around the world for its high professional standards.

Wonderland, the travelling exhibition of architecture, has arrived at its penultimate stop ? Vienna. The Vienna exhibition, opened on 7 June, presented 99 themes from nine European countries, promoting their views on new challenges of architectural practice. The exhibition was opened by Franz Morak, the Austrian Minister of Arts and Media, and Hannes Pflaum, Director of the Architecture Centre from Vienna.The works of equal value by studios and authors from Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, Slovakia and the Czech Republic represent the idea of strong creative communication. The two-week exhibition also includes the works by Croatian teams, among them by the Studio 3LHD, one of the co-ordinators of the Croatian layout of the exhibition. The studio also presented the film on the study for the physical planning of the commune of Bale. Beside the exhibition, in the two days following its opening, a series of lectures and workshops was held for all the participants. The topics ranged from communication within the architectural circles and the public, to practical problems in the operation of architecture studios.BY their content and concept, the exhibition and the presentations accompany the biennale event "Days of Architecture", organized in Vienna, after 2002 and 2004.The last presentation of Wonderland will be in St.Veit/Glan in September.

Saša Begović partner leader of the Studio 3LHD gave a lecture at the Technical University of Braunschweig in Germany, entitled "The 3LHD eXperience". The audience was given a cross-section of the work of the Studio, specially highlighting the most important projects "the Croatian Defenders" Bridge in Rijeka , the Croatian pavilion for the World Exhibition in Japan, and the recent urban project - the Development Study of the Commune of Bale.The lecture is part of a series of lectures "Architectural Positions", presenting renowned contemporary architects and studios to the students and professors of the "Carolo Wilhelmina" Technical University. Saša Begović dedicated his lecture to Professor Zdenko Strižić, whose work marked both Braunschweig and Zagreb during his academic career.

The travelling exhibition Wonderland 2004-2006 has arrived in The travelling exhibition Wonderland 2004-2006 has arrived in Zagreb, its seventh stop, where it was joined by eleven Croatian teams, including studio 3LHD, one of the coordinators of the Croatian part of the exhibition and authors of its layout. The gala opening of the exhibition was on 13 January at the Dom Hrvatskog Društva Likovnih Umjetnika (House of the Croatian Society of Fine Arts), and presents a cross-section of the achievements of 88 architecture teams. Together with the Croatian architects, there were also architects from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy and Austria. The designs were displayed on "pixels", square plates. The number of "pixels" is constant, so the increased number of authors decreases the available surface area. This imposes a constant need to re-examine the material to be exhibited and its reduction to its absolute essence.The exhibition is accompanied by a two-day workshop "Circumstances", conceived as a platform for the meeting of the teams and the exchange of ideas through discussions and joint work.After Zagreb, the exhibition will be on display in Ljubljana, where it will be joined by Slovenian authors. In June the exhibition returns to Austria to be displayed in Vienna, and in St.Veit/Glan in September.

In December, the Blauraum salon, café and gallery for architecture and design will host the second independent expedition of the Studio 3LHD, under the title Take One. In their endeavour to show their authenticity which is akin to their everyday work and philosophy close to the generation of architects "under 40", 3LHD decided to make a cross-section of everything taking place in their relatively large studio of 18 people. The staff were given a space of maximum 100 photographs to document specific moments and phases of some concurrent projects. The photographs are grouped by their authors, which makes the exhibition personalized and composed of a patchwork of small scenes from their everyday life, and all the participants in the studio work are entitled to their own personal exhibition within the joint concept. In this sense the exhibition is at the same time both collective and individual, thus reflecting the continuous flow and exchange of people and ideas in the Studio since its foundation in 1994. In the landscape of documented quickly collected pictures intertwine intimacy and organization, the individual characters of the participants, and the system of work in the Studio, one enters the real world of an architectural studio and finds almost forensic traces leading to designs.The visitors are invited to take away one photograph each which appeals to them or is interesting in any other way, so the layout of the exhibition is constantly changing, in gradual, uncontrolled or spontaneous disappearance, and the photographs-picture postcards continue their independent life outside the context where they were taken. This also gives a performance character to the exhibition.Just as the exhibition of 3LHD is self-revealing and told in the ?first person plural?, so does it implicitly reveal some common facts related to contemporary architecture, although it does not literally present architecture. It must be discovered by the viewer and reconstructed through the views, lenses and personalities of the 3LHD members.The exhibition is open until 4 January 2006.

Invited by the Belgian Chamber of Architects, the Faculty of Architecture in Brussels and the International Centre for Architectures, City Planning and Landscape (CIVA), Saša Begović and Marko Dabrović, partners and founders of the Studio 3LHD had a presentation in Brussels.The lecture which was held in the CIVA auditorium on 3 November 2005 presented the office and its work over the last eleven years. The presentation of the internationally awarded projects of the Croatian Defenders? Bridge in Rijeka and the Croatia pavilion of the EXPO 2005 in Aichi in Japan drew most attention. A film about city planning and layout of the Commune of Bale on the western coast of Istria was also shown.This was the second in the series of lectures given by the architects of the Studio 3LHD to the Belgian professional public.

Saša Begović, Marko Dabrović and Tanja Grozdanić from the Studio 3LHD joined a group of internationally renowned architects and city planners of younger generation, who presented their work to the students of architecture at the University of Leuven.In the De Molen Auditorium of the Catholic University of Leuven, they presented the 3LHD projects, highlighting the city planning solutions: the project of the Split waterfront, the project of the sports hall and community centre at Zamet, Rijeka, the project of the University complex in Dubrovnik and the spatial study of the Commune of Bale/Valle. In his approach to city planning and zoning, the Studio relies on the "Tuning Up" concept, the principle of defining and purifying the space function, with parallely harmonizing it with the context of "tuning up" and "tuning down" the intensity of the events. The lecture "Tuning Up" is one in the series of lectures organized under the title "Urban Tissue and Landscape Processes" by the Catholic University of Leuven for their students and professors. The lecture was of great interest.

At the second international Architecture Biennale in Rotterdam, Croatia is represented with the design "New lighthouses of the Croatian Adriatic", including also the design of the studio 3LHD, for the reconstruction and revitalisation of the abandoned hospital complex and park in Dubrovnik.The 3LHD design places the university campus, public and academic facilities into the abandoned tissue of the city. This provides a platform for quality academic tourism, not limited by attractive seasonal factors, and also creates a new public space for the local population. The design was presented by Saša Begović and Marko Dabrović.A separate working presentation of the Croatian design was organized at the Berlage Institute. The Dubrovnik design was shown in the presentation "Never-ending Summer", and Professors Alejandro Zaera, dean of the Institute, Elia Zengelis, Kelly Shanon, Pier Vittorio Aurelli also took part in the workshop and the discussion.The Biennale entitled "The Flood" takes place at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) and at the "Las Palmas" exhibition complex Rotterdam, from 26 May to 26 June, and is focussed on the relationship between water and architecture.Curator Adrian Geuze, landscape architect and manager of the studio West 8, has conceived five theme units: Water Cities, Mare Nostrum, Polders, Three Bays, and Flow, realized through exhibitions, workshops and lectures. Croatia took part in the "Mare Nostrum" theme unit, with seven concrete designs for seven sites along the Adriatic coast, where a quality development model is based on the generally accepted prerequisite of sustainable development.

The Croatian architectural studio 3LHD is participating at the great world exhibition "OPEN: new Design for Public Space" which opened on 28 January at the Chicago Architecture Foundation in Chicago, organized by the Van Alen Institute from New York. The opening was attended by a large number of visitors. The exhibition will be open until 7 May 2006.Among some twenty invited authors are the works of some of the most prominent world architects: Norman Foster (UK), Peter Eisenman (USA), Will Alsop (UK), Zaha Hadid (UK), Diller + Scofidio (USA), and others.3LHD presented its design "Croatian Defenders Bridge" in Rijeka, which won the "AR+D award 2002" for young promising architects, given by the distinguished "The Architectural Review", and the award of the American design magazine I.D. Magazine. The same project won the Croatian architecture award "Viktor Kovačić" in 2001. The design of the bridge also won the recognition of the "Piranesi" magazine (Piran, Slovenia) and of the "Bauwelt" (Berlin, Germany)."OPEN: new Design for Public Space" is an exhibition of contemporary public spaces, either under construction or recently completed, which present the most innovative designs of buildings, environment and urban design in cities from all over the world. The exhibited designs reveal new approaches to the idea of how we live in cities today and how we shall live in the future, regarding the infrastructure, environment, traffic, recreation, culture and tourism.

From 21 to 25 October 2004 Rotterdam will be the venue for the gathering of young European architects YEA! (Young European Architects) of which Studio 3LHD is also a member; Saša Begović will be its representative at that gathering. The objective of the organisation is to provide young architects with the opportunity to test their qualities and capacities in the specific European environment.Seminars and lectures, accompanied by the exhibition in the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI), will be concerned with changes in the architectural profession, together with its social, cultural and economic position in the dynamic environments of national and supranational communities. All participants are invited to complete a SWOT analysis questionnaire where they can give answers about how they see themselves and their architectural practice within their local and European contexts and to exchange their creative and business experiences in lectures and workshops. The answers to the questionnaire provide the working material which lists the answers given by the Studio 3LHD as one of the most interesting.The lecturers come from countries where development opportunities for young architects and their impact on the European scene vary. Vicente Guallart (Spain), Kaye Geipel (Germany), André Loeckx (Belgium) and Helena Pavel Njirić (Croatia) will give their perceptions on the circumstances. The moderators of this year?s gathering will be Bart Lootsma from the Netherlands and Shane O?Toole from Ireland.The presentation of the participants? works will last until 20 November in NAI.

In the Office of the President of the Republic of Croatia was held a presentation of the Croatian project "A Drop of Water - A Grain of Salt" for the world exposition EXPO 2005 to be held in Aichi, Japan.Promotion film of the project was presented, the authors described the Croatian pavilion and said it was divided into two floors and five sections and based on the salt field metaphor, and that visitors would watch a 12 minute presentation in groups.Public presentation of the project will be held in Muzej Mimara, Zagreb in August 2003.Members of the delegation of The National Committee of the Republic of Croatia EXPO 2005, Aichi, Japan were Ivica Maričić, Commissioner and President of the Croatian National Commitee, Dubravko Marić, executive coordinator of the project, Damir Fabijanić, author of the project and photographer, Dalibor Martinis, author of the project, multimedia, and 3LHD architects and authors of the project Saša Begović, Marko Dabrović and Silvije Novak.

Studio 3LHD, the winners of the world's most prestigious award for young promising architects "AR+D Award 2002" gave a presentation on "Document on the Bridge" at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in London on 11 March 2003.The lecture was organized by the British magazine "The Architectural Review", which also founded the award, in cooperation with RIBA. Saša Begović spoke on behalf of the Studio, giving a brief overview of the Studio's work so far, and then presented the awarded project the Croatian Defenders? Bridge. The project "The Document on the Bridge" was also presented; it includes architecture, the book "The Bridge = The Message" by the graphic designer Lana Cavar, and the experimental film by Nicole Hewitt "A Monument for Walking".
